Roma Women have secured a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage, joining Juventus who qualified automatically by winning the Italian league title.
After a 2-1 first-leg defeat to Sporting Lisbon, the Giallorosse won 2-0 in Portugal, thereby doubling the number of Italian teams in the upcoming Champions League. The draw for the 18-team group stage will be held tomorrow in Nyon.
“This is an extraordinary result for Roma and for all of Italian football,” said the president of Serie A Women, Federica Cappelletti. “The presence of three Italian teams in European competitions demonstrates the international growth of our clubs. I am convinced that Juventus and Roma in the Champions League and Inter in the Europa Cup can best represent our movement in the subsequent stages, with the hope that the Nerazzurre can also advance through the qualifying round as Roma did.”
