A newborn girl died shortly after delivery at a maternity home in Rome’s Testaccio district yesterday afternoon. The alarm was raised by the infant’s father.
Emergency medical services and police were dispatched to the scene. The facility, known as ‘Il Nido’ (The Nest) on Via Marmorata, has been sealed off by authorities. Two midwives, one of whom is the owner of the center, have been reported to prosecutors. The medical records have been seized.
The incident occurred around 3:40 PM. Officers from the Trevi District police station are conducting an investigation. As per standard procedure, the agents have obtained the clinical documentation, and the infant’s body has been made available to the judicial authorities for examination. The exact circumstances leading to the death remain unclear, though initial reports indicate the newborn passed away soon after birth.
According to its website, the Il Nido Association was founded in 1989 by a group of professional midwives “with the aim of accompanying mothers and children through the event of birth, operating in the area also through the participation and promotion of activities and initiatives.”
