The electoral commissions of the Courts of Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro have declared Domenico “Mimmo” Lucano ineligible to run for office, subsequently removing his name from the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) party list for the upcoming Calabria regional elections. The former mayor of Riace and current MEP was a candidate in both the northern and southern electoral districts. The decision is based on Italy’s Severino Law, which bars individuals convicted of certain crimes from holding public office. Lucano’s ineligibility stems from an 18-month sentence for fraud related to the “Xenia” trial. His legal counsel, attorneys Andrea Daqua and Giuliano Saitta, have filed an appeal with the Courts of Appeal in Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro, seeking to have Lucano reinstated on the ballot.
