A fatal accident occurred at an airfield on Via Prenestina Nuova in the Montecompatri area, on the outskirts of Rome. A 49-year-old expert parachutist from Grosseto crashed into vegetation near the runway after jumping from an altitude of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet).
Carabinieri from the Colonna station, firefighters from Frascati, and EMS personnel responded to the scene. Rescuers’ efforts to save the man were unsuccessful. The victim’s body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine at Tor Vergata for an autopsy.
The dynamics of the incident remain under investigation. Initial reports suggest both the main and emergency parachutes were deploying at the time of the accident.
The deceased has been identified as Sandro Bigozzi, a well-known figure in Grosseto and a recognized instructor within the Italian sport parachuting community with a career spanning thousands of jumps. Active with organizations like Skydive Maremma Fly in Scarlino, Bigozzi was considered a point of reference for many amateurs and professionals in the sector. He worked as a representative for a pharmaceutical company and is survived by his wife, Ilaria, and two young daughters.
