Fashion Icon Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91

MILAN – The Armani Group has announced the death of its founder, the legendary designer Giorgio Armani. He was 91 years old.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by “the employees and his family,” which read: “With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani. Mr. Armani, as he was always called with respect and admiration by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. Tireless, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many diverse and ever-new projects, both ongoing and in development.”

The official statement was accompanied by a signature quote from Armani himself, set in white text on a black background: “The mark I hope to leave is one of commitment, respect, and attention for people and for reality. It all starts from there.”

The Group’s note paid tribute to his lasting vision, stating that over the years, “Giorgio Armani created a vision that expanded from fashion to every aspect of living, anticipating the times with extraordinary lucidity and practicality.” It highlighted his “inexhaustible curiosity” and his “attention to the present and to people,” which made him a beloved and respected figure.

On the critical matter of succession, the Group confirmed its commitment to continuity, noting that Armani had always made independence of thought and action his distinctive trait. The company stated, “The family and employees will carry the Group forward with respect and continuity of these values.” This aligns with Armani’s own past statements, where he outlined plans for a “gradual succession,” passing responsibilities to his closest collaborators, such as Leo Dell’Orco, family members, and his entire team.

Armani’s influence extended far beyond fashion into film, where he dressed countless stars for red carpet events, creating a “cultural synergy” between style and cinema. His impact was also deeply felt in his hometown. Milan’s Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, proclaimed a citywide day of mourning for the day of the funeral, stating that Armani’s “creative gaze, his active participation, and his support for the life of our city will be missed.” In a further tribute, the Italian national basketball team will wear black armbands in their European Championship match against Cyprus in his honor.

A public viewing will be held at the Armani/Teatro on Via Bergognone 59 in Milan from Saturday, September 6th, to Sunday, September 7th. In accordance with his wishes, the funeral on Monday, September 8th, will be a private ceremony.
