A 78-year-old woman was struck by a train at the Osnago station in the Lecco province shortly before 7 p.m. local time. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim in grave condition to San Gerardo Hospital in Monza.
Reports indicate the train conductor applied the brakes but was unable to prevent the impact. Train service on the Milan-Lecco line was suspended for approximately one hour following the incident.
Railway police (Polfer) are investigating the circumstances to determine the cause. The inquiry is examining whether the event was a suicide attempt or if the woman, who may have been disoriented due to a degenerative illness, accidentally ended up on the tracks.
