NAS Carabinieri Suspend Restaurant Operations After 13 Fall Ill from Tuna

The NAS Carabinieri have suspended the food service operations of a bar-restaurant, pending the outcome of investigations, after 13 people fell ill yesterday from eating meals prepared with tuna. All victims exhibited symptoms consistent with scombroid syndrome, a form of poisoning caused by high histamine levels linked to the improper preservation of fish.

During an inspection carried out with local health authority (ASL) personnel, the military police discovered an unauthorized food storage area that had not been notified to the competent authorities. Four portions of octopus, destined for laboratory analysis, were seized, and a precautionary suspension of the business’s activity was ordered.

The Carabinieri have also traced the entire distribution chain of the fish purchased by the establishment back to a supply center in the Macchiareddu industrial area, where 36 kilograms of fish products were seized.

“The investigation is ongoing,” explained the officers, “to fully clarify the dynamics of the events and to verify the entire supply and food preservation chain.” Some of the 13 intoxicated individuals were kept under medical observation, though their conditions are not reported to be serious; others have been discharged and have returned home.
