Italian Derby Set for US Open Quarterfininals as Sinner and Musetti Advance

An all-Italian quarterfinal is set at the US Open after world number one Jannik Sinner and compatriot Lorenzo Musetti each won their fourth-round matches in Flushing Meadows.

Sinner secured his place with a dominant, straight-sets victory (6-1, 6-1, 6-1) over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. Dressed in a blue kit and cap—a change from the burgundy red he wore in the first week—the top seed needed just one hour and 21 minutes to overpower his opponent. Bublik, one of only two players to have beaten Sinner in 2025 alongside Carlos Alcaraz, was undone by a high number of unforced errors that paved the way for the Italian’s straightforward win. The match was watched by notable figures including Anna Wintour and actors Rami Malek and Alec Baldwin.

“I am very happy. Thank you, everyone,” Sinner said in an on-court interview. Regarding a brief exchange with Bublik after the match, Sinner added, “We know each other well; he congratulated me and wished me all the best.” Microphones captured Bublik telling Sinner, “I’m not bad, but you are ‘the GOAT’ (Greatest Of All Time),” a compliment that drew a wide smile from the Italian.

Looking ahead to the matchup with Musetti, Sinner commented, “Italian tennis is in great shape and Lorenzo is one of the best. From an Italian perspective, it’s beautiful to know there will be an Italian in the semifinal.”

Musetti had previously expressed his desire for this clash, stating before Sinner’s match, “I would like to play Jannik more… from an ambition standpoint, I would like to try to beat the world number one.” The Tuscan player, who advanced by defeating Spain’s Jaume Munar in three sets (6-3, 6-0, 6-1), described his next opponent as “the best player in the world: a champion.” However, he observed that the pressure would be on Sinner, a factor he might use to his advantage.

This quarterfinal marks the first time in history that two Italian men have faced each other this deep in a Grand Slam tournament, underscoring a golden era for Italian tennis.

In other results, the Italian duo of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals. However, the men’s doubles pair of Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli were eliminated in a tight third-set tiebreak. Elsewhere in the singles draws, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alex De Minaur, Iga Swiatek, and Naomi Osaka all booked their places in the quarterfinals.
