Italian Five Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte has accused Israel of planning to treat activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla as “terrorists.” The flotilla, which includes vessels that set sail from Italian ports, aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the siege amid what it calls a “genocide and famine” of Palestinians.
In a social media post, Conte described the situation as “beyond absurd,” stating that a “criminal like Netanyahu acts with impunity after having slaughtered over 60,000 Palestinians, including 20,000 children,” while those attempting to bring aid “risk being treated as terrorists and harassed.”
Conte directly challenged Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, asking if she intends to “set aside the selfies with the cap” and side with those trying to stop the “horror,” or if she will, “as always, let her friend Netanyahu have his way.” He demanded to know if she would defend Italian nationals involved in the operation and its many supporters and called for sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel, accusing the premier of having “lost her words and her patriotism.”
The M5S leader vowed that his party would maintain high visibility on the issue, stating, “Beyond the economic support given to the Italian organizations committed to bringing aid to the Palestinian people, the M5S will keep attention very high and make itself heard in all Institutions against the inaction of those who govern us.” He concluded that “silence and immobility are for the cowardly and the complicit.”
