On the occasion of the International Day of Trade Union Action for Peace, the Base Union (Unione Sindacale di Base – USB) of Trieste organized a demonstration at Gate 4 of the Trieste Port. Participants displayed banners and flags for peace, along with slogans such as “We do not work for war.”
Alessandro Perrone of USB Trieste explained that the mobilization is a regular event to advocate for peace against war, as it marks the date commemorating the start of the Second World War. He stated that this year’s event carries additional significance, expressing solidarity with Palestine and the people of Gaza. Perrone clarified that the protest was held because the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone are designated as logistical hubs for military operations, a use the union strongly opposes. He added that a primary reason for the demonstration was to advocate for the ports to remain civilian and to voice opposition to wars while showing support for suffering populations.
