Key Forensic Review Resumes in Chiara Poggi Murder Case

The preliminary evidence hearing in the new investigation into the murder of young Chiara Poggi is set to resume in Milan. This follows a request for the transmission of raw data related to nail sample analyses from the Ris of Parma and geneticist Francesco De Stefano, who handled the prior examinations.

The murder case had led the Pavia Prosecutor’s Office to focus its attention on Andrea Sempio, a friend of the victim’s brother. For the same crime, Alberto Stasi, Poggi’s boyfriend at the time, is nearing the end of serving a definitive 16-year prison sentence.

The information, which also includes the procedures used by forensic pathologist Marco Ballardini to collect the samples, was requested by court-appointed expert Denise Albani. The request was made on the order of Pavia preliminary investigations judge Daniela Garlaschelli. The purpose of the unrepeatable examination is to resolve the investigation’s central questions: whether the DNA extracted from Chiara’s nail margins is usable, if the DNA found on her left pinky finger is indeed attributable to Sempio, and to whom a second isolated DNA profile belongs. Advisors for the defenses of Sempio and Stasi, as well as for the prosecutors and the Poggi family, are also participating in the review.
