Inclement Weather Forces Cancellation of Final Night of Political Festival in Southern Italy, EU Vice President’s Appearance Scrapped

The third and final evening of the political festival “La Piazza” in Ceglie Messapica was cancelled on Wednesday due to a violent storm. The event was set to feature an interview with the European Commission’s Executive Vice President, among other guests.

Raffaele Fitto had already arrived in the Brindisi province town but was forced to depart due to the severe weather conditions. Organizers from the ‘La Piazza’ association explained that despite preparing a covered alternative venue, powerful thunderstorms caused black-outs to the electrical grid and disrupted cellular networks, making it impossible to proceed with the event safely.

In a statement, the president of the association and publisher of Affaritaliani, Marcello Antelmi, expressed his gratitude: “We thank the Vice President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, for his great willingness, which he confirmed this evening despite the bad weather that hit Ceglie Messapica. Unfortunately, the conditions to guarantee his intervention in complete safety were not there.” Antelmi extended his thanks to other scheduled guests, declared satisfaction with the overall outcome of the festival’s edition, and renewed the invitation for next year, promising a program rich with guests and topics.
