Milan’s Torre del Moro Rises from the Ashes as Reconstruction Advances Amid Ongoing Trial

The tower on Via Antonini in Milan, known as the Torre del Moro, is returning to life. The 18-story building was completely engulfed by flames on August 29, 2021, leaving 82 families homeless.

Nearly four years later, a trial is underway with 13 defendants, including designers, construction firms, and material suppliers—particularly those responsible for the external cladding that caught fire. According to the allegations of prosecutor Marina Petruzzella, these materials were chosen to cut costs.

Reconstruction efforts have now begun. Some families have been able to move back into the villas that are part of the residential complex, while others are awaiting the completion of their units. The main tower, which will be renamed the “Tower of Silk,” is expected to be ready next year.

“I feel bitterness,” Mirko Berti of the tenants’ committee told *Il Giorno*, “because in these four years, nothing has been done to improve fire safety regulations, building security, or emergency housing management for cases like ours.”

The sentiment among residents remains profoundly affected. “Each of us has lived through something that changed us forever,” is written on the social media pages of the ‘Rinascita Antonini’ tenant group, which recently shared a fire department video containing emergency calls and footage from the first responders as the fire spread rapidly and relentlessly.
