Rome Greenlights Jubilee-Funded Parking Hub for New Metromare Station

Rome’s city government has confirmed the construction of a new interchange parking facility on Via Bepi Romagnoni to serve the upcoming Acilia sud-Dragona Metromare station. The project, classified as a Jubilee work, is deemed essential to ensure the full functionality of the rail-to-road transport hub and to secure approximately €2 million in co-financing from a total budget exceeding €4.3 million. The city hall, Campidoglio, announced that tender procedures are underway, with construction set to begin by the start of 2026.

Originally drafted in 2015, the project had stalled but was revived and updated by the Department of Public Works with a series of improvements designed to minimize its impact on existing trees and enhance the surrounding greenery. Key environmental measures include:

The preservation of 25 trees, including highly valuable cork oaks.

Environmental compensation through the creation of a 150-tree woodland and an additional 70 trees to shade the parking area.

The introduction of a Mediterranean garden and an equipped park with paths, seating, and anti-vandalism fencing.

An irrigation system fed by a rainwater collection tank.

Permeable, light-colored paving to reduce the heat island effect.

The relocation of existing trees where possible, plus 220 new large trees selected for type and stature.

Strict contractual clauses for the construction firms, mandating multi-year maintenance and responsibility for plant protection during works.

“This project is necessary to make the new Metromare station fully usable and to not lose the Jubilee funding,” stated Public Works Councillor Ornella Segnalini. “But above all, we are implementing it with the utmost attention to safeguarding the greenery, reducing tree removals, and planning compensation and environmental enhancement works that will make the area richer and more livable.”

“The Municipality X has carefully followed the project’s evolution and welcomes the solutions identified to combine the infrastructure’s functionality with environmental protection,” emphasized Deputy Mayor and Environment Councillor for Municipality X, Valentina Prodon. “The new station and the interchange parking represent a step forward for local mobility and, at the same time, an opportunity to enrich our green heritage.”
