Civil Protection Department Extends Severe Weather Warning to Central Italy

The low-pressure system of Atlantic origin, currently affecting northern Italy, is expected to extend into the country’s central regions. This will bring widespread and scattered rainfall, primarily characterized by thunderstorms, which may be persistent in some areas.

Based on available forecasts, the Civil Protection Department, in agreement with the involved regions, has issued an updated adverse weather warning. This new alert integrates and extends the one issued yesterday. The regional authorities are responsible for activating local civil protection measures.

The severe weather phenomena, impacting various areas of the country, could lead to hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities. A national summary of these risks is available in the criticality and alert bulletin on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).

The warning forecasts widespread showers and thunderstorms from this evening, Thursday, August 28th, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Emilia-Romagna, extending to Umbria and Lazio. From tomorrow morning, the weather will also impact Molise and Campania. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms will persist over Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Tuscany. The storms will be accompanied by heavy downpours, frequent lightning, possible local hail, and strong wind gusts.

Due to the ongoing and predicted phenomena, an orange alert has been assessed for tomorrow, Friday, August 29th, in Lombardy, most of Tuscany, and parts of Lazio and Molise. A yellow alert is in effect for the remaining sectors of Lazio and Molise, parts of Piedmont, Liguria, and Marche, and the entire territories of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, and Campania.
