Heavy Traffic Expected This Weekend as Italians Return from Holidays

A significant increase in traffic is anticipated this weekend on the Anas road network as travelers return to major cities in Central and Northern Italy. According to estimates from Anas’s Road Mobility Observatory, 12,585,000 vehicle journeys are forecast.

Traffic monitoring service Viabilità Italia has issued a red alert for the afternoon of Friday, August 29th, the morning of Saturday, August 30th, and for the entire day of Sunday, August 31st.

Until September 8th, a total of 1,392 construction sites—approximately 83% of the active total (1,672)—will be closed or suspended.

“Italians are heading home from their holidays to resume their daily routines,” stated CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme. “I urge everyone to drive carefully, as it is fundamental for ensuring road safety. According to our latest research on driving habits, 51% of Italians do not believe it is dangerous to exceed speed limits. Furthermore, 11.4% think it is acceptable to ‘do other things’ while driving, and only 55.4% are convinced that road accidents are caused by incorrect behavior. I urge everyone to respect speed limits and to plan their journeys. My strongest recommendation is to never use a cell phone while driving; everything else can wait.”

The routes most affected by this return traffic will be those heading north towards major cities from the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian coastal highways, as well as along the border crossings towards France, Slovenia, and Croatia.

A ban on heavy goods vehicles will be in effect on Saturday, August 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on Sunday, August 31st from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
