Italian Magistrates’ Association Denies Political Opposition Stance

The National Association of Magistrates (ANM) has stated that the judiciary has “no intention whatsoever to engage in political opposition or to hinder the exercise of the prerogatives and powers belonging to the executive branch.” The comment was made by ANM President Cesare Parodi in a formal note, issued in response to remarks by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Rimini Meeting.

“Magistrates apply the laws,” Parodi added, “while necessarily taking the overall legal framework into account, as their prerogatives require. Recent rulings from the European Court confirm the correctness of this approach, which is dutifully respectful of the separation of roles.”
