In response to a recent Israeli strike on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, which killed 20 people—including five journalists—in a televised attack, the Italian chapter of the ‘Global Movement to Gaza’ has announced it is mobilizing. The group is preparing to dispatch dozens of boats laden with activists and humanitarian aid from Genoa and Sicily to join the international ‘Global Sumud Flotilla.’
Organizers stated on social media that the countdown has begun. Maria Elena Delia, a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Italian Coordinator for the Global Movement to Gaza, announced, “Many boats will set sail from Sicily on September 4, while vessels carrying humanitarian aid will depart from Genoa on August 31.” She described the effort as a grassroots movement, conceived by civil society members aiming to fill an institutional and humanitarian void. While acknowledging it is merely “a drop in an ocean of need,” Delia stated the action demonstrates growing public impatience with international inaction and government complicity, adding that participants are “ready to intervene to break the siege and shed light on Israel’s crimes.”
Until tomorrow, the Global Movement to Gaza, alongside Music for Peace and the Autonomous Collective of Port Workers (Calp), is holding a general mobilization in Genoa. Their goal is to collect 45 tons of food supplies within five days. The aid will be loaded onto boats departing for Gaza on Saturday, August 30, in a public ceremony open to all citizens.
In a coordinated action fully compliant with international law, dozens of small boats are scheduled to sail in two waves between August 31 and September 4 from Barcelona, Sicily, and Tunisia.
