The Milan Tribunal has stated that the trial did not “allow for the verification, beyond any reasonable doubt, of the alleged deficiencies in the railway safety management system” attributed to the CEO “in light of his role and his prerogatives within Rfi [Rete Ferroviaria Italiana].” The court’s reasoning was disclosed in the written justification for its February 25th verdict concerning the 2018 Pioltello rail disaster, which resulted in three deaths and over 100 injuries. This verdict led to the acquittal of eight defendants, including top managers and executives of the Italian railway network company, among them former CEO Maurizio Gentile and the company itself. Only the former head of the maintenance unit was convicted.
