Monte Bianco Tunnel to Close for Extensive Maintenance, Adding to Alpine Travel Disruption

The Mont Blanc Tunnel will be completely closed for extraordinary maintenance work from 5 PM on Monday, September 1st, until 5 PM on Friday, December 12th. The closure was confirmed today in a statement by the GEIE TMB, the body that manages the tunnel.

This interruption will allow for a second ‘test worksite’ to rehabilitate the tunnel’s vault across two sections, totaling 254 meters. This project follows a first test worksite completed in the autumn of 2024. The autumn season is expected to bring complicated transalpine traffic conditions, particularly through the Aosta Valley, as the Little St. Bernard Pass (Italy-France) is also scheduled to close to traffic starting September 22nd due to major works on the French-side departmental road.

Furthermore, the Great St. Bernard Tunnel (Italy-Switzerland) will be closed for nine nights, spread out between August 25th and October 21st. This is a result of the closure of the Swiss cantonal road A21 for repairs to the Les Toules tunnel, which was damaged by an avalanche this spring.
