A high school teacher was stabbed in the back on a street in Bassano del Grappa, near Vicenza, allegedly after refusing to give a cigarette to a young man. The 62-year-old victim underwent delicate surgery Tuesday evening. The knife blade penetrated his spinal column, stopping just millimeters from his aorta and spinal cord. Police are currently searching for the assailant. The wounded man is not believed to be in life-threatening condition.
