Another Gondola Capsizes in Venice, Tipping Tourists and Gondolier into the Canal

Another gondola tipped over in Venice this morning, giving the gondolier and the tourists on board an unexpected “bath.” The incident is believed to have been caused by a sudden movement from the passengers—many of whom take advantage of the rides to take selfies or videos with their mobile phones—which unbalanced the classic rowing boat.

Fortunately, the event occurred on an internal canal within the lagoon city, posing no risk to those involved. The individuals had to cling to moored boats and the grates of ground-level palazzo windows to make it back to dry land. A video of the mishap, unsurprisingly, made the rounds on social media in short order.

A similar incident occurred in May on the Grand Canal, just meters from the Rialto Bridge. On that occasion, tourists were also blamed for moving to take a selfie and destabilizing the gondola, causing the gondolier to also fall into the water. That scene unfolded before many tourists crowding the Riva del Carbon, a central thoroughfare in the water city, and was captured on the city’s surveillance cameras.
