The Palestinian National Authority has stated that Israel’s approval of a key project to build 3,400 housing units in the occupied West Bank “fragments the unity” of the Palestinian territory, turning it into a “veritable prison.” The comments came in response to the greenlighting of the ‘E1’ plan.
In a statement, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry “condemned in the strongest terms” the Israeli decision to advance the project, which it said “undermines the prospects for implementing the two-state solution by fragmenting the geographic and demographic unity of the Palestinian state.”
“The plan consolidates the division of the occupied West Bank into isolated areas and geographically disconnected cantons,” the Authority said in its statement on the Smotrich-backed plan, adding that these areas are “similar to veritable prisons, where movement between them is only possible through occupation checkpoints, under the threat of armed settler militias spread throughout the West Bank.”
