A 28-year-old man from Mali caused a major disturbance this morning at Terminal 1 of Milan’s Malpensa Airport, where he started a fire near Gate 13, sending flames shooting up and sparking panic among passengers. The individual also used a hammer to smash check-in monitors. He was subdued by security personnel from Sea, the company that manages the airport, and subsequently arrested by the Polaria police force. Firefighters intervened, evacuating the terminal as a precautionary measure and securing the area. Airport operations have since resumed. The man, who holds subsidiary protection status and had no prior record, faces charges of aggravated damage. A fast-track trial has been scheduled for tomorrow.
