The municipality of Bionaz, located in the upper Valpelline, has been cut off following severe afternoon thunderstorms. A mud and debris slide from the Varere stream has inundated the regional road connecting the town to the valley floor at the border with the municipality of Oyace.
Mayor Valter Nicase confirmed that no people or vehicles were involved in the initial event. However, he added, “In the town, we have people who are unable to get down to the valley.” The mayor noted that road interruptions from such hydrogeological instability are “the usual event that predictably occurs.”
In a separate incident, a debris flow in the Berruard stream in Ollomont forced the closure of the municipal road to the hamlet of Glassier. As a precaution, approximately twenty people from several families in the village of Barliard were evacuated.
