A 15-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car this afternoon while riding his bicycle across a pedestrian crossing in Loreggia, near Padua. The victim, identified as Martin Pattaro from the nearby town of Trebaseleghe, was on the ‘Ostiglia’ cycle path and was traversing the marked crosswalk when a car, coming from a ring road, hit him. The driver reportedly failed to notice the boy in the road.
The impact was severe. Upon arrival, medical personnel from the Suem emergency service could only confirm the teenager’s death. An air ambulance from Padua was initially dispatched but was later stood down as medics realized there was nothing that could be done.
The tragedy underscores urgent road safety concerns in a summer marked by dozens of serious accidents in the Veneto region. The area of Loreggia, a significant municipality in the Camposampierese district, has now seen three fatal accidents within a single month.
The driver of the vehicle, said to be in a state of shock, told rescuers he had not seen the cyclist crossing. He has undergone clinical assessments to determine his mental and physical condition at the time of the impact.
