Laboratory tests conducted by the National Institute for Infectious Diseases ‘Lazzaro Spallanzani’ in Lazio have confirmed 21 new cases of West Nile virus infection since the last update on August 14. Of these new cases, 16 patients presented with fever and 5 with neurological syndrome.
The new cases were primarily detected in the following municipalities: Aprilia (Latina province), Ardea (Rome province), Cassino (Frosinone province), Castrocielo (Frosinone province), Cisterna di Latina (Latina province), Genzano (Rome province), Latina, Pontinia (Latina province), Sabaudia (Latina province), Sermoneta (Latina province), Sezze (Latina province), Carpinone (Isernia province), and Sessa Aurunca (Caserta province).
With these latest confirmations, the total number of diagnosed West Nile virus infections in 2025 has reached 174. The cases, categorized by the probable area of exposure, are distributed as follows: 155 cases within the Latina Local Health Authority (ASL) district; 10 cases in the Rome 6 ASL; 5 cases in the Frosinone ASL; one case in the Rome 3 ASL; and 3 cases outside the region (2 in Caserta province and 1 in Isernia province).
The status of the 174 confirmed West Nile patients is as follows: 43 patients are hospitalized in general wards; 29 patients have been discharged; 88 patients are in good condition and recovering at home; 4 patients are in intensive care; and 10 deaths have been recorded.
