Italy Surpasses 2 Million Grid-Connected Solar Installations, Cementing PV as Energy Pillar

Italy has exceeded the milestone of 2 million photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the national grid, confirming solar power as a cornerstone of the country’s electricity system. This sustained growth, driven by residential, industrial, and utility-scale installations, is fostering greater awareness of the benefits of self-consumption and the need to integrate solar generation into the national energy mix to reduce electricity bills.

According to data compiled by Italia Solare based on Gaudì-Terna figures, 132,276 new PV systems were connected in the first seven months of 2025, adding 3,354 MW of capacity. The cumulative total reached 2.011 million installations as of July 30, 2025, with installed capacity surpassing 40 GW (40,430 MW).

Lombardy leads Italy’s regions with 326,586 connected PV systems, followed by Veneto (274,699 installations).

“We have surpassed a symbolic milestone: two million installations mean millions of families, businesses, and administrations choosing a clean, reliable, and autonomous energy source,” commented Paolo Rocco Viscontini, President of Italia Solare. “Today, solar power is no longer a marginal option; it is an integral part of our energy infrastructure. It is time to accelerate mechanisms supporting self-consumption and integration with storage, overcoming the regulatory and legislative bottlenecks that still hinder the development of an energy system based on clean technologies. These technologies can ensure our country has contained and stable energy prices over time.”
