A group of thirty migrants, all men from Bangladesh and Egypt including approximately ten unaccompanied minors, landed at the port of Roccella Jonica early this morning.
The migrants were rescued offshore by the Roccella Jonica Coast Guard, under the command of Captain Daniele Ticconi. They had departed Libya last Friday evening and were found approximately 150 miles off the Calabrian coast. At the time of rescue, they were aboard a small, roughly 7-meter fiberglass vessel navigating rough seas.
Following transfer onto a Coast Guard patrol boat, the migrants were brought into Roccella port and disembarked. After initial checks by law enforcement and medical personnel from the Reggio Calabria health authority, they were handed over to Red Cross volunteers. They are being temporarily housed in the First Reception and Aid Centre set up within the port area.
This morning’s arrival marks the twelfth migrant landing at the port of Roccella Jonica in the past four months.
