Rome Pays Final Respects to TV Legend Pippo Baudo at Teatro delle Vittorie

The lying-in-state for iconic Italian television host Pippo Baudo opened at 10 AM at Rome’s Teatro delle Vittorie, allowing the public to bid farewell to the presenter who died two days ago aged 89. The memorial will remain accessible until 8 PM today and from 9 AM to 12 PM tomorrow.

Fellow presenters Mara Venier and Katia Ricciarelli were among the first arrivals, entering arm-in-arm. They later embraced Baudo’s daughter and personal assistant in the family section. The ceremony drew numerous luminaries including Fiorello, Renzo Arbore, Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, singer Eros Ramazzotti, actors Lino Banfi and Gloria Guida, comedian Max Giusti, lawyer Giorgio Assumma, and host Gigi Marzullo.

Ramazzotti offered a brief tribute upon departure: “The best, the best… it’s tough.” RAI Director General Roberto Sergio, embraced by Venier and Ricciarelli at the entrance, declared: “RAI will continue to draw inspiration from Baudo,” adding that the host’s legacy endures through contemporary performers.

Baudo’s coffin rests in the studio where he created his most celebrated programs, positioned before a red curtain and encircled by crimson roses. Career highlights play across television screens throughout the venue. Prominent wreaths include those from Italy’s President, the Chamber of Deputies Speaker, Rome’s Mayor, and state broadcaster RAI, with a military honor guard standing vigil.
