Two prisoners, a 30-year-old Moroccan citizen and a 19-year-old Tunisian citizen, escaped from the Bolzano District Prison on Wednesday afternoon. According to Gennarino De Fazio, Secretary General of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police Union, the inmates exploited the presence of construction scaffolding during their outdoor exercise period. They climbed over the perimeter fence and fled, aided by the fact that the boundary wall was unguarded at the time due to known staffing shortages.
“An alarm was activated at 16:00, and searches are currently underway involving the Penitentiary Police and other law enforcement agencies,” De Fazio added.
Later in the evening, State Police located and apprehended the Moroccan inmate in Merano. However, searches for the Tunisian escapee continue without success, De Fazio confirmed.
