Hollywood comedian and TV host Jimmy Kimmel has publicly linked his recent acquisition of Italian citizenship to former President Donald Trump, stating “the situation is much worse than we imagined.” Kimmel made the remarks during an appearance on comedian Sarah Silverman’s podcast. The four-time Oscar host initially announced his new citizenship status in June at the Italian Republic Day celebration in Los Angeles. Speaking from a stage set in a Beverly Hills villa garden, Kimmel credited his “beloved grandmother Edith,” whose family originated from Candida in Italy’s Avellino province. He detailed his family’s migration history, explaining that his great-grandparents left Ischia for New York after the devastating 1883 Casamicciola earthquake which killed much of their family. Kimmel has hosted ABC’s late-night show for 23 years.
