A memorial ceremony was held this morning for Brigadier Pietro Cuzzoli and Deputy Corporal Ippolito Cortellessa, the Carabinieri officers brutally shot dead on August 11, 1980. The officers were gunned down by three terrorists from the “Prima Linea” group after intercepting them at Ponte di Cetti. The assailants had just robbed a Viterbo bank and were attempting to board a bus to evade capture.
Regional civil, military, and religious authorities today laid a wreath at the victims’ memorial plaque, honoring the fallen officers who lost their lives while executing their duties. Attendees included Provincial President Alessandro Romoli, Viterbo Deputy Mayor Alfonso Antoniozzi, Bishop of Viterbo Orazio Francesco Piazza, Provincial Carabinieri Commander Massimo Friano, and the victims’ family members. A requiem mass followed at the Church of Farine.
