Turk’s Grotto at Gaeta’s Split Mountain Sanctuary Reopens After Decade-Long Closure

GAETA, Italy – The Turk’s Grotto (Grotta del Turco), part of the Sanctuary of the Split Mountain (Santuario della Montagna Spaccata) in Gaeta, reopened to the public on Friday, August 15, 2025, following a ten-year closure. The inauguration coincided with the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary and Italy’s Ferragosto holiday, attended by Sanctuary Rector Fr. Daniele Belussi, Fathers from the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) community, and Gaeta Mayor Cristian Leccese.

Located on the western slope of Mount Orlando near the sanctuary at Via Santissima Trinità 3, this striking marine cavern is once again accessible. This follows the recent restoration of the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity’s Crucifix Chapel, facade, and sacristy.

PIME Fathers facilitated specialized work to rebuild the approximately 300 steps and secure the rocky walls and railings. Visitors can now descend to admire the grotto’s renowned turquoise sea waters and dramatic white cliffs.

Described in a statement as a place of extraordinary beauty uniting nature, legend, and spirituality, the restoration represents a major investment by PIME. “We aimed not only to enhance its importance as a spiritual site but also to fully restore the splendour of the natural beauty entrusted to us here by the Lord,” stated Rector Fr. Belussi. He emphasized the Fathers’ responsibility to continue the Benedictine monks’ legacy, caring for both spiritual and sociocultural aspects: “The magnificent Turk’s Grotto belongs to everyone. Its accessibility and enhancement are a rightful concern for us missionary fathers.”

The grotto will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, remaining closed on Mondays. Admission is free, operating on a donation basis.
