Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte has launched a scathing critique of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s social media celebration marking 1,024 days in government. “This morning, while Meloni remains silent and inactive on the cost-of-living crisis, starvation wages, tax increases, and the genocide in Gaza, she celebrates her government’s anniversary online,” Conte stated.
“We wouldn’t want to interrupt the Brothers of Italy party,” Conte continued, “but while they’re forming conga lines at the Prime Minister’s office (Palazzo Chigi), the Sole 24Ore reports that Italy’s social security agency INPS authorized approximately 314 million hours of wage supplementation (Cassa Integrazione) in the first six months of this year alone. This impacts over 304,000 workers, 90% employed in the industrial sector.”
Conte emphasized the financial toll: “These workers have lost €3,000 in net wages during a period of soaring grocery bills. Requests for wage supplementation in the mechanical and metallurgical sectors have surged by over 35% compared to 2024.” He accused the government of inaction: “In 1,024 days, this administration hasn’t implemented a single serious measure on wages. They rejected a minimum wage and even blocked our proposal to top up the incomes of workers on reduced hours, thereby failing to protect their purchasing power. Meloni celebrates, Italians do not.”
