EU Backs Ukraine’s Role in Peace Talks, Reaffirms Support Amid Trump Efforts

EU leaders declared that any just and lasting peace ensuring stability and security must adhere to international law, including principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of international borders. “Ukraine’s path to peace cannot be decided without Ukraine,” they stated in a joint declaration agreed overnight by the European Council President and all member states except Hungary. They stressed that meaningful negotiations require a ceasefire or reduction in hostilities.

The leaders welcomed former US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and achieve lasting peace and security. However, the EU affirmed it will continue providing Ukraine with comprehensive political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support, coordinated with the US and like-minded partners. They reiterated Ukraine’s inherent right to self-defense and pledged sustained restrictive measures against Russia.

The statement outlined the EU’s readiness to contribute to future security guarantees based on member states’ capacities and international law, while respecting national defense policies and collective security interests. It emphasized Ukraine’s inherent right to determine its own future and reaffirmed support for its EU accession path.

In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned via social media that Russian forces show no signs of ending hostilities but rather appear to be preparing new offensive operations. He thanked European leaders for their “clear support,” stating security matters for Ukraine and Europe must be addressed collectively. Zelensky expressed support for Trump’s determination, adding that unified positions are essential to prevent Russia from “deceiving the world again.”
