Mondello Beach Turnstiles Spark Controversy and Investigation

Turnstiles installed a decade ago at Mondello beach do not block access to the shoreline but were implemented to improve staff organization and enhance bather safety, according to the CEO of the Italo-Belgian company holding the concession for a large stretch of the coast. “A controversy has arisen that saddens us. We are a historic company, over 120 years old, managing a beautiful but challenging beach, especially in July and August,” the CEO told ANSA.

Regional deputy Ismaele La Vardera launched the criticism, conducting a surprise visit to the beach days ago. A video of his visit circulated widely on social media, prompting him to submit a motion to the Sicilian Assembly urging the Schifani government to intervene.

The Harbour Master’s Office and the Financial Police are currently verifying the terms and compliance of the concession granted to the Italo-Belgian company. A report is expected shortly.

“We respect the law, pay taxes, guarantee services at the lidos, and employ 160 people directly and indirectly,” the CEO added. “Following the regional law on free beach access approved five years ago, we created seven access points, relinquishing parts of our concession area. We invest annually to improve services. Even the wooden fences along the shoreline, which represent a cost for us and Mondello’s seven other concession holders, are part of responsible management and are useful for protecting bathers.”
