Zach Cregger’s mystery horror film “Weapons,” starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, debuted at number one in the Italian box office, earning €658,642 over its first five days according to Cinetel data. The film, centered on students vanishing without a trace, displaced Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” which earned €478,317 (-64% from last weekend) in second place, pushing its total haul to €7,061,393.
Another new entry, “Freaky Friday 2,” claimed third place. The Disney comedy sequel, reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan 22 years after the original and directed by Nisha Ganatra, opened with €220,993 (a €898 average in 246 cinemas), reaching €295,286 over five days.
Gareth Edwards’ “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” featuring Scarlett Johansson, slid to fourth, adding €177,079 over the weekend. Its cumulative total now stands at €10,494,507. James Gunn’s “Superman,” starring David Corenswet, landed fifth with a weekend take of €123,734, bringing its overall earnings to €5,277,750.
The re-release of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 4K held sixth place, earning €113,572 (a €1,032 average in 110 cinemas) for a total since its 2021 re-release of €705,738. Horror film “Bring Her Back” dropped four spots to seventh with €111,031 (total: €663,754), while the fourth “Naked Gun” installment, directed by Akiva Schaffer, fell to eighth with €82,750 (two-week total: €459,012).
Previews for the comedy “Tutta colpa del rock” (All the Fault of Rock), directed by Andrea Jublin and starring Lillo Petrolo, took ninth place with €54,058 earned on August 9th and 10th (a €241 average in 224 cinemas) ahead of its full release on August 28th. Disney/Pixar’s “Elio” rounded out the top ten, earning €45,638 over the weekend for a total of €2,706,940.
Overall, the Italian box office generated €2,586,721 this weekend, a 29% decline from the previous week’s €3,651,661 and a 7.85% drop compared to the equivalent weekend in 2023 (€2,808,622).
