The Prosecutor’s Office of Guayas will open an official investigation into the deaths of 12 newborns at the Guayaquil University Hospital in Ecuador, a case that has shocked the city, reports Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo. The prosecutor’s office has urgently requested the infants’ medical records and other information from the hospital director to clarify the circumstances.
Authorities have already contacted the mothers of the deceased infants and other witnesses to gather testimony. Ecuador’s Health Minister, Jimmy Martin, announced an internal investigation yesterday and ordered the dismissal of the hospital director.
Today, ACESS (Agency for the Assurance of Quality in Health Services and Prepaid Medicine), the state body responsible for monitoring the quality of public and private health services, stated it will conduct an audit and in-depth case analysis to shed light on the twelve deaths.
