Seven individuals are under investigation concerning the death of Stefano Argentino, the young man who confessed to murdering his university colleague Sara Campanella, who died by suicide in prison in Messina on Wednesday morning. The Messina Prosecutor’s Office has served seven formal notices of investigation (“avvisi di garanzia”) in connection with the upcoming autopsy on Argentino’s body. On August 12th, the prosecutor will appoint their own consultant; the suspects will also be permitted to appoint their own technical experts to attend the autopsy, an unrepeatable procedure.
The Messina Prosecutor’s Office aims to determine if negligence contributed to the death. Argentino had reportedly expressed suicidal intentions multiple times and was consequently placed under a special surveillance regime. However, 15 days prior to his death, he was returned to ordinary detention, sharing a cell with other inmates. Argentino was found hanged in his cell.
