An 83-year-old woman from Pontinia has died at the Santa Maria Goretti Hospital in Latina, becoming the sixth confirmed victim of West Nile virus in the Lazio region. The patient was admitted to the emergency department on July 24th. Suffering from multiple comorbidities and in critical condition, she was transferred to intensive care where she later died. Separately, a first case of West Nile virus infection has been detected in Rome at the Spallanzani hospital. The infected individual is a woman with no known links to the Agro Pontino area.
