Egypt’s Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly announced today that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo will officially open its doors on November 1. Madbouly made the announcement at the start of a cabinet meeting, following approval from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
This marks the latest opening announcement for the world’s largest and most modern Egyptian museum, situated near the Giza Pyramids. The long-awaited inauguration comes after a missed target last July and nearly 20 years since construction began in 2006. Madbouly urged all involved parties to accelerate preparations to ensure this deadline is met.
While some halls of the museum are already accessible, the GEM’s official inauguration has been postponed multiple times. The new museum will complement, not replace, the 19th-century Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the opening “has been prepared to be an exceptional event,” adding to a series of significant national events tied to Egypt’s modern history. He also stated that high-profile dignitaries from numerous countries worldwide are expected to attend.
