Police Chief Vittorio Pisani laid a laurel wreath this morning in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, Palermo, commemorating Deputy Assistant Commissioner Antonino Cassarà and Officer Roberto Antiochia, murdered by the mafia. The ceremony was attended by the victims’ families, along with civil and military authorities. Cassarà, a key collaborator of Giovanni Falcone within Palermo’s anti-mafia pool, played a crucial role in investigations leading to the first maxi-trial against the mafia clans. Married with three children and head of Palermo’s Mobile Squad, Cassarà was assassinated on August 6, 1985, at age 38, while returning home from police headquarters. Later, Prefect Pisani proceeded to the “Pietro Lungaro” barracks chapel for a memorial Mass officiated by State Police Chaplain Don Massimiliano Purpura. This was followed by the screening of a documentary dedicated to Cassarà in the barracks’ “Corona” hall.
