Iran Appoints Supreme Leader’s Top Advisor as National Security Chief

President Masoud Pezeshkian has appointed Ali Larijani, principal advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). Larijani replaces Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who held the position since 2023, according to local media reports.

A former Revolutionary Guards member, Larijani previously served as SNSC Secretary from 2005–2007 and was Parliament Speaker between 2008–2020.

The appointment follows Tehran’s security overhaul after its 12-day conflict with Israel. On Sunday, Iran reinstated its Defense Council—previously active during the 1980s Iran-Iraq War—to centralize defense strategy reviews and enhance military capabilities nationwide.
