Meta Raises Instagram Live Streaming Threshold to 1,000 Followers

Meta has implemented stricter requirements for starting live broadcasts on Instagram, now mandating a public profile and a minimum of 1,000 followers. This policy shift, uncovered by TechCrunch in the absence of an official announcement from the US tech giant, effectively bars smaller creators and occasional users with private accounts or fewer followers from accessing the live streaming feature. The update aligns Instagram’s policy with rival TikTok, which imposes the same minimum follower requirement for live streams. YouTube, in contrast, sets its threshold at 50 subscribers. Users attempting to go live without meeting Instagram’s new criteria will encounter a message stating: “We’ve changed the requirements for using this feature. Only public accounts with at least 1,000 followers can create live videos.” TechCrunch reports significant online backlash to the news, noting users have taken to social media to voice disappointment, with some demanding the limit be scrapped. An Instagram spokesperson defended the move in a statement to the outlet, asserting it is designed to “improve the overall live experience.”
