A young foreign woman in her early twenties was allegedly sexually harassed and raped in a disused building in central Perugia. On Sunday afternoon, a 45-year-old Afghan national was detained as a suspect for aggravated sexual violence, kidnapping, and multiple counts of aggravated personal injury.
According to a statement by Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone reconstructing the July 19 incident, the suspect initially approached the victim under false pretenses. After a brief, friendly conversation, he claimed he was opening a new restaurant and invited her to view the premises, suggesting potential employment. She accepted, as the location was en route to her home.
Once inside the derelict building—which still contained tables and chairs—the suspect reportedly locked the entrance. When the woman attempted to leave, investigators state she was sexually harassed and then raped despite resisting. The assailant allegedly covered her mouth to stifle her screams.
The victim escaped the next morning when her attacker fell asleep. During the ordeal, she managed to activate her phone’s camera and record part of the assault. After several days, still traumatized, she reported the crime to state police and received hospital treatment for injuries requiring 30 days to heal.
Mobile and forensic police teams collected biological evidence at the scene, with DNA tests confirming a match to the suspect.
