Twelve individuals have been arrested—part of 16 total precautionary measures—for alleged mistreatment and violence against disabled and elderly patients at two assisted-living facilities in Pachino. The investigation, directed by the Siracusa Prosecutor’s Office, uncovered systemic abuse and humiliation endured by 20 residents with mental disabilities or advanced age at the social-healthcare centers. Authorities launched the probe after citizens reported that disabled occupants were forced to live in squalid conditions without proper care.
