Storm Hits Empolese Valdelsa, Damages Church Cross and Topples Trees

The Empolese Valdelsa area near Florence has been struck by the severe weather system currently battering Tuscany. Firefighters responded to numerous calls across the municipalities of Empoli, Fucecchio, and Vinci on Tuesday afternoon due to strong winds and thunderstorms.

Empoli sustained the most significant damage. High winds detached the historic iron cross from the top of the Collegiata church in the town center. The cross was recovered shortly afterward without causing injuries or further damage. Firefighters removed it and returned it to the church authorities.

Reports indicate fallen trees in various parts of Empoli and roof tiles littering the central Piazza Farinata degli Uberti. Several streets were cordoned off, with municipal tree and branch removal services expected to commence operations in the coming hours.

In another incident, a large tree fell onto a parking canopy in Via Arnolfo di Cambio. Authorities confirmed no individuals were involved. Emergency crews also secured the roof of a house on Via Cesare Battisti.

Civil Protection coordinated the overall emergency response, with teams from local associations working alongside municipal crews throughout the affected areas.
