Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte issued a scathing statement following Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. “Just hours ago, 13 families wept in hospitals for loved ones killed while seeking food—a daily scene of tears and agony,” Conte declared. “UNICEF has documented 18,000 child fatalities thus far, averaging 28 per day.”
Conte accused Israeli forces and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of perpetrating “genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” a characterization he noted was shared by author David Grossman. He lambasted Herzog for delivering “moral clarity lectures” to Mattarella, whom he faulted for opposing the “slaughter.”
“The attempt to distort reality is staggering,” Conte emphasized, arguing that “acts of extermination are being downplayed as ‘wartime errors,’ and crimes against humanity recast as ‘internationally lawful actions.’ These are unsustainable, intolerable falsehoods. Italy and Europe’s posture amounts to tragic complicity.”
He further denounced Western leaders: “How will we explain their failure for months to sanction or isolate Israel’s government—halting arms transfers, agreements, and all cooperation? They’ve rolled out the red carpet for arrogance, violence, the collapse of law, and the destruction of humanity.”
