The modest and reserved life of Margherita from Scanno was transformed into a continuous stream of visitors over the weekend. Tourists and the curious arrived to meet her and take photos, friends and relatives came to offer congratulations, and acquaintances brought newspapers and gifts to thank her for “making Italy fall in love.” This followed an interview with the 94-year-old that went viral on social media, amassing tens of thousands of likes and comments.
Margherita, who is nearly 94, is now the only woman who wears the traditional dress of Scanno, an Abruzzo village situated a thousand meters above sea level, every single day. Without a smartphone or wifi, she learns of her newfound fame from those around her, who read aloud the affectionate comments, articles, and messages. This unintentional nonagenarian influencer listens with a sense of ironic detachment from her window, dressed in the traditional attire she has worn since 1949.
“They won’t leave me alone anymore,” she told ANSA with a smile. “I won’t even be able to sit outside my front door; they find me everywhere.” Now, everyone wants to meet her, like Paolo, a young musician who traveled from Vasto on the Abruzzo coast on his birthday for the sole purpose of meeting her. “Madam, I’ve been looking for you all day! Can we take a picture?” he asked.
“Again?” she replied, ironic yet obliging. And, once more, she kindly agreed, posing in her unmistakable style.
